Good to know: This is a border-area destination. Indian nationals should carry a government photo ID (Aadhaar/passport) for routine checks at army posts en route; foreign nationals need prior clearance for some sectors. We confirm the current requirement for your dates and arrange the guidance — it's a normal part of visiting, not a hurdle.
Why Gurez
Gurez is what Kashmir looked like before the postcards. You cross Razdan Pass at about 3,300 metres — often the coldest point of the whole trip — and drop into a valley where the Kishanganga runs glacial blue past timber villages, and the pyramid-shaped Habba Khatoon peak rises over Dawar. The valley's Dard-Shina people have their own language and dress; this is a cultural journey as much as a scenic one.
What we arrange
Private cab from Srinagar (an early start matters — the pass is best crossed before afternoon weather), guesthouse or hut stays in Dawar and onward to Tulail for those who want the quieter end, riverside kahwa stops, and the ID-check guidance for the drive.
Good to know
Plan a minimum of one night — a day trip means six hours of driving for one hour of valley. Mobile coverage is patchy beyond Dawar (BSNL/Jio work best). The road typically opens June and closes with the first heavy snow, usually late October or November.
